What fits in a 20-yard dumpster?

A 20-yard dumpster holds 20 cubic yards, about 7 to 10 pickup-truck loads. It fits a kitchen remodel, a whole-house decluttering, or a single-layer roof of about 25 squares. The 20-yard includes 3 tons. It does not take concrete, dirt or brick; those go in the 10 or 15-yard.

How much weight can a 20-yard dumpster hold before overage?

The 20-yard dumpster includes 3 tons, which is 6,000 lb. Roofs and plaster are the usual reasons a 20-yard goes over. At 80-lb bundles, one square of shingles weighs about 240 lb, so 3 tons (6,000 lb) covers about 25 squares of one layer. Household junk rarely reaches 3 tons; it fills the box by volume first.

Worked example: You tear off 28 squares of one-layer shingles at 80 lb per bundle: 28 × 240 = 6,720 lb. The 20-yard includes 6,000 lb, so you pay for 720 lb: 0.36 ton × $75 = $27.

Check your own shingle bundle label or material weight. How weight is billed and proven.

Will a 20-yard dumpster fit in my driveway?

The 20-yard dumpster sits on a footprint of about 22 by 8 feet. Plan for a clear, level spot at least 25 feet long and 10 feet wide, plus a straight approach for the truck of roughly 60 feet and about 23 feet of overhead clearance from wires and branches. Our drivers set wooden boards under the rails to protect concrete and asphalt.

  • Driveway placement on private property needs no city permit in most cases. Street placement can. See placement and permits.
  • Keep it off septic lids, sprinkler heads, soft yard and concrete poured in the last few weeks.
  • Move cars and open gates before the truck arrives. A blocked drop is a $125 dry-run fee.

Approach length and overhead clearance are typical roll-off truck figures; the driver confirms on site.

Is a 20-yard too small or too big for my job?

Drop to the 15-yard for a garage or a smaller roof and save on the base price. Step up to the 30-yard for new construction, additions, or a two-layer roof. The 30-yard has the same 22 × 8 ft footprint, so it fits the same driveway, with 6-ft walls and 4 tons included.

Guessing too small costs a second haul, priced as a new rental. Guessing too big costs only the difference in base price. When torn between two sizes, the larger one is usually cheaper overall. Compare: 15-yard dumpster · 30-yard dumpster · all sizes

What will my 20-yard bill include?

Your 20-yard includes 3 tons (6,000 lb) and 7 days. Weight over that is $75 per ton, billed by the exact pound from the certified landfill scale ticket, which comes with your final invoice 3 to 5 business days after pickup. If the ticket shows 500 lb over 6,000 lb, you pay 0.25 ton × $75 = $18.75.

  • Extra days: $25 each
  • Mattress, tire or Freon appliance: $50 each
  • Blocked drop or overfill: $125 dry run

What can't go in the dumpster?

Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries can't go in any Hayes Bros dumpster. Mattresses, tires and appliances that hold Freon (fridges, freezers, window AC units) can go in for $50 each, because the disposal site handles them separately. Most household junk, furniture, wood, drywall, shingles and yard debris are fine.

20-yard dumpster questions

How much can a 20-yard dumpster hold in weight?

3 tons (6,000 lb) is included. You can load more, and the extra pounds are billed at $75 per ton, by the exact pound on the landfill scale ticket.

How many squares of roofing fit in a 20-yard dumpster?

About 25 squares of one layer with 80-lb bundles stays within the 3 tons included. Lighter shingles stretch that. Two layers roughly doubles the weight per square.

Will a 20-yard dumpster fit in a regular driveway?

Most single-family driveways in Midland can take it. The box is 22 ft long and 8 ft wide; plan for about 25 ft by 10 ft of clear, level space and room for the truck to back straight in.

What is the difference between a 20-yard and a 30-yard?

Same length and width, 22 × 8 ft. The 30-yard walls are 6 ft tall instead of 4 ft, so it holds 10 more cubic yards, and it includes 4 tons instead of 3.
