Dumpster Placement: Driveway or Street?
Wooden boards go under the rails on every drop. Here is how much space each size needs and what to prepare before the truck arrives.
Where should a dumpster go in my driveway?
Put the dumpster on a flat, hard surface such as a concrete or asphalt driveway, with room for its length plus about 3 feet and a width of about 10 feet. The roll-off truck needs a straight approach of roughly 60 feet and about 23 feet of overhead clearance.
| Size | Footprint | Space to clear |
|---|---|---|
| 10-yard | 12 × 8 ft | About 15 × 10 ft |
| 15-yard | 16 × 7.5 ft | About 19 × 10 ft |
| 20-yard | 22 × 8 ft | About 25 × 10 ft |
| 30-yard | 22 × 8 ft | About 25 × 10 ft |
| 40-yard | 22 × 7.5 ft | About 25 × 10 ft |
Approach length and clearance are typical roll-off truck figures. Our driver confirms on site.
Will a dumpster damage my driveway?
Hayes Bros drivers place wooden boards under the dumpster's steel rails and rollers on every drop, which spreads the weight and keeps the steel off your concrete or asphalt. Very heavy loads on new or thin concrete still carry risk, so point the driver to the strongest part of the slab.
- Avoid concrete poured within the last few weeks.
- Keep it off septic tank lids, water meters and sprinkler heads.
- Soft lawn or wet ground can rut; tell us when you book.
Can a dumpster go on the street?
A dumpster on a public street or alley usually needs permission from the city, because it sits in the public right-of-way. Driveway and private-lot placement generally does not. Rules differ by city, so check the city's rule before booking street placement.
See the city pages in our service areas for local rules, and HOA rules for your subdivision. Confirm with your permit office or HOA before placement.
Do I have to be home for delivery?
You don't need to be home. Deliveries run 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and the driver calls or texts 20 to 30 minutes before arrival to confirm the spot. If the drop zone is clear and marked, the driver places the dumpster without you. A blocked drop is a $125 dry-run fee.
- Mark the spotCones, chalk or a note on the garage door.
- Clear the pathMove cars, trailers and anything under low branches.
- Unlock gatesLocked gates are the top cause of dry runs.
