Small green roll-off dumpster for heavy debris on a lawn

How to Load a Dumpster

Fit more, stay under your included tons, and avoid an overfill fee. Five loading steps and the fill-line rule.

How do I load a dumpster to fit the most?

Load a dumpster with flat, heavy items on the floor first, spread evenly front to back, then break down furniture and fill the gaps with small debris. Keep everything level with the top rim. If your dumpster has a rear door, use it for the first half and latch it before filling the rest.

  1. Plan the orderHeavy and flat first: drywall sheets, doors, plywood.
  2. Spread the weightLoad evenly from end to end, not all at the door end.
  3. Break it downTake legs off tables, cut up carpet, collapse boxes.
  4. Fill the gapsBags and small debris go into the spaces between big items.
  5. Stop at the rimNothing sticking up or out over the top edge.

How full can I fill a dumpster?

Fill a dumpster level with the top rim, never above it. Texas law requires loose loads to be secured so nothing falls or blows from the truck, and an overfilled roll-off can't be tarped and hauled legally. If the driver arrives to an overfilled load, a $125 dry-run fee applies and the excess must be removed before transport.

Law: Texas Transportation Code, Chapter 725, Transportation of Loose Materials (statutes.capitol.texas.gov). Confirm specifics with your hauler.

Concrete, dirt, brick and rock

Only in the 10 and 15-yard, and only up to half the wall height. A clean load of one material, such as concrete only, qualifies for clean-fill pricing.

How do I keep others from filling my dumpster?

Keep the dumpster in view of the house when possible, keep any rear door closed and latched, and cover it with a tarp at night. Debris added by neighbors counts toward your weight, and banned items found in the load can bring fees.

Loading questions

Can debris stick out above the top of the dumpster?

No. Debris must stay level with the top rim. Loads above the rim can't be hauled legally on Texas roads.

Should heavy items go in first?

Heavy, flat items go on the floor first, spread evenly, so the container lifts level and the load stays stable.

Can I throw debris in from a second-story window?

For construction work, OSHA requires an enclosed chute when material is dropped more than 20 feet outside the building's exterior walls (29 CFR 1926.252). Homeowners should use the same caution.

Should I cover my dumpster?

Covering helps. Rain adds weight you pay for, and a tarp keeps others from using your dumpster.
