7 Reasons Dumpster Bills Go Over the Quote (and How to Avoid Each)
Reviewed October 21, 2026 by the Hayes Bros Dumpster Rental team.
Dumpster bills go over the quote for seven reasons: extra weight, extra days, special items, an overfilled load, a blocked drop, a same-day rush, and a second haul. Each one has a fixed amount at Hayes Bros, and each one can be planned around before delivery.
| Reason | Hayes Bros amount | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Weight over the included tons | $75/ton, by the pound | Keep concrete and dirt in a 10 or 15-yard; estimate weight first |
| 2. Keeping it past 7 days | $25/day | Schedule delivery for the day work starts |
| 3. Mattresses, tires, Freon appliances | $50 each | Count them before you book and ask about them |
| 4. Overfilled above the rim | $125 dry run + unload excess | Load flat and break items down |
| 5. Truck can't reach the spot | $125 dry run | Move cars, unlock gates, check for low wires |
| 6. Same-day delivery | $50 rush | Book by 3:00 PM the day before |
| 7. Dumpster too small | A second rental | Size it right; one size up is often cheaper |
Which of these causes the most disputes?
Weight causes the most disputes in the dumpster business, because renters often can't see how the weight was measured. That is why every Hayes Bros invoice includes the certified landfill scale ticket, and overage is billed by the exact pound, with no rounding up to the next ton.
Example: a 15-yard comes back at 5,600 lb against 5,000 included. The bill adds 600 lb: 0.3 ton × $75 = $22.50, with the ticket attached.
What should a dumpster quote include?
A complete dumpster quote states the size, the rental days, the tons included, the overage rate per ton and how it is rounded, and the delivery and pickup. If any of these is missing, ask before you book. See what a dumpster costs.

Can I avoid overage fees completely?
Light household debris rarely reaches the included tons. Heavy debris is where overage comes from, so separate it into a 10 or 15-yard.
Does Hayes Bros charge fuel surcharges?
No fuel surcharge appears in our rental terms. The seven items above are the add-ons that exist.
